Gamma, as head of Mitsugoshi, creates a giant centralised bank with Mitsugoshi-branded paper currency. They also start giving out massive loans, to the point that the amount of paper money in circulation massively exceeds the gold in their coffers. Their greatest economic adversary, a giant union of the other large corporations of the world, follows suit and also creates a banking infrastructure and paper currency. To make a long story short, one of the arcs revolves around Shadow circulates billions in counterfeit currency, causing a huge collapse in trust, where the corporate alliance currency becomes effectively worthless, but Mitsogushi survives due to a massive amount of gold stolen in the process. Due to the collapse in trust, the corporate alliance itself completely collapses, giving Mitsugoshi a total worldwide monopoly on paper currency and banking, basically making all of Midgar and a few other kingdoms into a giant economic bubble under their control
